Winter rugs

Winter Rugs are padded, insulating horse rugs suitable for autumn and winter months. A horse can wear a winter rug both in the field and in the stable. The rugs are available in different thicknesses and are waterproof.

To prevent a horse from growing a thick coat, you can place a rug on it as soon as the nights get colder. However, this does not prevent you from having to shear your horse in some cases. A shaved horse should actually be continuously under a winter rug.

The choice of rug thickness depends on the outdoor temperature and your horse's coat. If you have shaved the horse, a good rug is very important. The more cold-sensitive or thinner the horse's coat, the thicker the rug should be. Also take into account how much your horse or pony stays outside and inside, the good condition of the horse or pony, and to what extent it has already developed a winter coat. You also don’t want it to get too warm.

  • Between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, the horse can wear a thin rug, use an unlined or a 100 grams lined rug for this.
  • Between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius, you can start with a winter rug (200, 300, 400 grams).
  • At temperatures below freezing, a thick winter rug (400 grams) is preferably recommended, possibly with a liner, depending on the conditions described above.
